First Step Consulting recently worked with a large charity, which supports disabled people. Their trustees enlisted our expertise because they found it challenging to attract dedicated volunteers who would support the charity and were experiencing low levels of coordination among their workforce. We partnered with the client’s team to build a compelling Employee Value Proposition and to create new strategies to keep employees and volunteers engaged.
Despite being a respected charity, the client was facing difficulties recruiting high-performing team members, including volunteers, and maintaining a motivated workforce.
We began by conducting interviews and workshops with a large number of the client’s employees and supporters to gain a solid understanding of their opinions and experiences.
Our task was to establish employee segments which would enable us to amass a wide number of viewpoints and expectations. We also reviewed their HR strategy and organisational structure to explore how current recruitment and team-working practices could be improved to maximise efficiency.
Furthermore, we carried out external research with more than 500 university students and recent graduates in order to assess how this charity was perceived among local talent. Our team also conducted a series of in-depth interviews with experienced professionals in the third sector, discussing more broadly how charities can meet the evolving roles and needs of volunteers.
We then studied modern talent management practices and our consulting team rigorously assessed the charity’s employer brand. As a result, a three-year roadmap was created to help our client recruit higher numbers of skilled job-seekers in the charity industry.
In order to help the charity achieve their ultimate goal of acquiring and retaining talented volunteers, we devised various strategies and projects in partnership with their senior management. A training programme was also delivered to share what we have learnt from years of collaborating with volunteers.
"Having worked with First Step Consulting for about six months, I would unreservedly recommend them. The quality of their analysis was outstanding and their team has shown us how to drive talent attraction and go beyond traditional recruitment approaches."
